Welcome to our Year 11 and 12 Mathematics Tutoring Program, which covers four different levels;

  • Mathematics Standard
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Extension 2

Mathematics Standard

In our Mathematics Standard program, students use mathematical concepts to make informed decisions in their daily lives. By engaging with real-world applications, they develop a strong understanding and competence in mathematics, which can be applied across various HSC subjects.

Mathematics Standard 1

This course enhances numeracy by building student confidence and making mathematics meaningful. Students will gain skills to manage everyday situations and solve problems in daily life, work, or further education.

What Students Learn

In Stage 6, Mathematics Standard 1 helps students:

  • Develop their knowledge, understanding, and skills in mathematical reasoning and precise communication.
  • Explore various applications of mathematics in contemporary contexts through mathematical modelling, solving problems related to their current and future needs.
  • Gain a solid mathematical foundation for entering the workforce or pursuing further community and workplace training.

Year 11 Course

The Year 11 Mathematics Standard 1 course covers four main topics, each divided into subtopics:

  • Algebra
    • Formulae and Equations
    • Linear Relationships
  • Measurement
    • Applications of Measurement
    • Working with Time
  • Financial Mathematics
    • Money Matters
  • Statistical Analysis
    • Data Analysis
    • Relative Frequency and Probability

Year 12 Course

The Year 12 Mathematics Standard 1 course builds on the same four topics and introduces an additional topic, ‘Networks’. The topics and subtopics are:

    • Right-angled Triangles

    • Scale Drawings
  • Financial Mathematics
    • Investment
    • Depreciation and Loans
  • Statistical Analysis

Mathematics Advanced

The Mathematics Advanced course is a calculus-based program designed to help students view the world through a mathematical lens, investigating patterns, relationships, and uncertainties. This course encourages students to explore problems through observation, reflection, and reasoning.

Students in the Mathematics Advanced course will sit for an HSC examination. The Mathematics Extension 1 course includes all content from the Mathematics Advanced course for both Year 11 and Year 12.

What Students Learn

In Stage 6, the Mathematics Advanced course enables students to:

  • Develop their mathematical knowledge, understanding, and communication skills.
  • Apply mathematical concepts in contemporary contexts using mathematical modelling to solve present and future problems.
  • Cultivate problem-solving skills through observation, reflection, and reasoning.
  • Build a foundation for further studies in mathematics-related disciplines.
  • Prepare for future pathways that may involve mathematics and its applications at the tertiary level.

Year 12 Course

The Year 12 Mathematics Advanced course includes four of the same topics, with an additional topic in Financial Mathematics replacing Exponential and Logarithmic Functions:

Mathematics Extension 1

Our Mathematics Extension 1 course is designed to help students develop a deep understanding and advanced skills in mathematics. This course emphasizes rigorous mathematical arguments, proofs, and extensive use of mathematical models.

The Year 11 Mathematics Extension 1 course includes all content from the Year 11 Mathematics Advanced course. Similarly, the Year 12 Mathematics Extension 1 course encompasses all content from the Year 12 Mathematics Advanced course. Students in this course will sit for an HSC examination.

For those progressing to Mathematics Extension 2 in Year 12, this course includes all content from Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Advanced.

In Stage 6, the Mathematics Extension 1 course helps students:

  • Develop comprehensive knowledge, understanding, and skills in mathematical reasoning and precise communication.
  • Formulate rigorous mathematical arguments and proofs, and apply mathematical models extensively.
  • Appreciate the interconnected nature, beauty, and functionality of mathematics.
  • Prepare for further study in mathematics or related disciplines at the tertiary level, where mathematics plays a crucial role.
  • Gain a strong mathematical foundation for future careers in fields such as science, engineering, finance, and economics.

Year 11 Course

The Year 12 Mathematics Extension 1 course continues with topics from Year 11 and introduces new topics:

  • Vectors

    • Trigonometric Equations
  • Calculus
    • Further Calculus Skills
    • Applications of Calculus
  • Statistical Analysis
    • The Binomial Distribution

Mathematics Extension 2

The Mathematics Extension 2 course offers students the chance to develop advanced mathematical skills and a deep understanding of algebra and calculus. This course emphasizes the intrinsic value of mathematics, encouraging invention, intuition, and exploration. Students will expand their conceptual knowledge and explore new areas of mathematics not previously covered.

The Year 12 Mathematics Extension 2 course includes all content from the Year 12 Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Advanced courses. Together, these courses form a comprehensive continuum in Stage 6 mathematics.

Students enrolled in Mathematics Extension 2 will sit for the HSC examination.

Outcomes

Upon completing their Mathematics learning program with us, students preparing for their HSC would have acquired in-depth understanding across all four stages of mathematics in both Year 11 and Year 12.

Throughout the course of their learning students will have access to a variety of resources and tools that will aid them in their understanding of these complex mathematical concepts. We offer interactive lessons that engage students through virtual manipulatives and visual aids to reinforce key mathematical principles.
