Our Year 3 to Year 6 English, Maths and Science curriculum is designed to support the development of students’ knowledge and understanding across several key focus areas.
Year 3-6
English 3-6 Focus Areas
Our curriculum is designed to support the development of students’ knowledge and understanding across several key focus areas:
- Oral Language and Communication
- Vocabulary
- Reading Fluency
- Reading Comprehension
- Creating Written Texts
- Spelling
- Handwriting and Digital Transcription
- Understanding and Responding to Literature
In the English 3–6 curriculum, we emphasise the importance of establishing strong foundations in oral language, reading, and writing during the early years. The syllabus is structured to foster early literacy knowledge and skills while maintaining a focus on the appreciation and enjoyment of literature.
Importance of Oral Language, Reading, and Writing
Research underscores the critical role of oral language, reading, and writing in students’ academic development. Oral language encompasses spoken, nonverbal, symbolic, and gestural communication. This broad definition ensures that all students’ communication and language development needs are met.
Designing Effective Learning Experiences
Examples of outcomes and content that can be addressed in parallel are provided for each focus area. These examples are not exhaustive; teachers should tailor their approach based on their students’ needs and abilities. By selecting related content thoughtfully, educators can create rich, meaningful teaching and learning experiences that support comprehensive student development.
Interrelated Content and Parallel Teaching
Connections between the focus areas are integral to our teaching approach. Knowledge and skills in these areas often develop concurrently, making it beneficial to address them in parallel. In the context of our syllabus, parallel teaching involves:
- Integrating multiple focus areas simultaneously
- Sequencing related content logically
- Applying knowledge, understanding, and skills across interconnected focus areas
Parallel teaching allows educators to efficiently cover essential concepts while helping students draw meaningful connections in their learning.
Maths 3-6 Focus Areas
Our mathematics curriculum for Years 3-6 is crafted to facilitate the advancement of students’ knowledge and comprehension across multiple critical areas of focus:
- Number and Algebra
- Measurement and Geometry
- Statistics and Probability.
In the Number and Algebra learning program, students enhance their skills in numeration, place value, and adding or subtracting whole numbers up to four digits. They delve into fractions, decimals, percentages, patterns, algebraic thinking, and problem-solving strategies. Engaging activities and real-world examples help students grasp numerical concepts, laying the groundwork for advanced mathematical operations.
The mathematics 3–6 curriculum emphasises the importance of a solid foundation in measurement and geometry. Students explore measurement relationships, convert between units, and tackle real-world problems involving length, area, volume, time, and mass. In geometry, they enhance spatial reasoning by identifying and classifying shapes, understanding position and movement, and exploring symmetry.
The Statistics and Probability domain helps students develop skills in collecting, organising, and interpreting data through tables, graphs, and charts. They learn to read and create various graphs, such as bar, line, and picture graphs.
Science and Tech 3-6 Focus Areas
Our Science and Technology curriculum, tailored for students in Years 3-6, is designed to engage and challenge young minds. Through hands-on activities, students will develop their critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills while exploring a range of scientific concepts and technological advancements, such as:
- Geology
- Astronomy
- Energy
- Design and Technology
- The Built Environment
- Computer Skills
