Kindergarten to Year 2

K-2 Foundations

At our tutoring centre, we are dedicated to fostering the foundational literacy skills of young learners in Kindergarten through Year 2. Our comprehensive approach focuses on key areas essential for early literacy development:

Focus areas

Oral Language and Communication

We emphasise the importance of strong oral language skills and effective communication. Through interactive activities and guided conversations, we help students enhance their speaking and listening abilities, which are crucial for overall language development.

Vocabulary

Building a robust vocabulary is fundamental to reading and writing success. We introduce new words in meaningful contexts, helping students understand and use a wide range of vocabulary in their daily communication and academic work.

Phonological Awareness

Our program includes activities designed to develop phonological awareness, a critical skill for early readers. We engage students in exercises that help them recognise and manipulate sounds in spoken language, laying the groundwork for successful reading and writing.

Print Convensions

Understanding the conventions of print is an essential part of early literacy. We teach students about the basic rules of written language, such as reading from left to right and top to bottom, understanding spaces between words, and recognising different punctuation marks.

Reading Fluency

Fluency in reading is achieved through practice and guidance. We work with students to improve their reading speed, accuracy, and expression, enabling them to read smoothly and with confidence.

Reading Comprehension

Understanding what they read is just as important as being able to read the words. We teach strategies that help students grasp the meaning of texts, ask questions, make predictions, and connect new information to what they already know.

Creating Written Texts

We encourage students to express their thoughts and ideas through writing. Our activities focus on helping them organise their ideas, use appropriate vocabulary, and structure their sentences and paragraphs effectively.

Spelling

Accurate spelling is a key component of writing. We teach students spelling rules and patterns, and provide them with practice that helps them spell words correctly in their writing.

Handwriting and Digital Transcription

Legible handwriting is important for clear written communication. We provide guidance and practice in forming letters correctly, spacing words appropriately, and writing neatly.

Understanding and Responding to Literature

We introduce students to a variety of literature, helping them understand and appreciate different genres and styles. We encourage them to respond to what they read through discussions, written responses, and creative projects.
